Wood Deck Completed!

Hi there, this is Shimizu.

The wood deck for the roof balcony of our studio has been completed at last, after three years of longing ever since we moved to Kichijoji. It was designed by Senichiro Watanabe of VOLO, who also renovated my house five years ago. We have known each other since we met in university, and collabrated in some projects such as "La Fabbrica", a guest house in Numazu.

As for now, I'm enjoying the fresh and woody smell of the cedar, and looking forward to seeing the gradual aging too.

Tenth Anniversary of more Trees

Hi there, this is Shimizu.

Last night, I attended more trees’ tenth anniversary party held at TRUNK (HOTEL) in Shibuya. A sun tanned sample (probably brought from their office) of the wooden calendar that I designed years ago suggested how long I’ve been involved with more trees as a supporter. The calendar’s concept of “feeling the passage of time in the long term through the aging of wood” is beginning to be realized at last. However, it takes much more time to carry out forestry projects. I will continue supporting more Trees’ challenge in recovering the health of forests.

ISU JUKU exhibition

Hi there! This is Shimizu.

Before I moved to Milan, I attended "ISU JUKU", a chair-designing program, where students learned how to design chairs erogonomically and actually have their ideas materialized at factories. The chair that I designed at ISU JUKU eventually became my debut work from a manufacturer in Asahikawa, therefore it is no exaggeration to say that if it were not for the program, I wouldn't have been what I am today.

ISU JUKU is now preparing an exhibition, and I will be participating with an easy-chair and ottoman from Souve Collection of Tendo, and a brand new stacking chair that has just been released this year from Econifa by Itoki. Along with the exhibition, I will speak at a linked seminar with Rika Kawato (textile designer), and Daisaku Maeda (craftsman).

Hi there, this is Shimizu!

I'd like to announce that I'll be giving a lecture at Sori Yanagi Memorial Design Institute of Kanazawa College of Art, as a related event of the exhibition "BUTTERFLY STOOL 60th" commemorating Butterfly Stool's 60th anniversary. The lecture will start at 2 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday 8th July. It'll probably be right in the middle of the rainy season, but I look forward to seeing you there.

By the way, Kanazawa College of Art is where my father teaches as a professor. What a coincidence!

Milano, April 2017

Hi there, this is Shimizu!

I was in Italy during the first half of April to see Milano Salone after eight years' absense.

We tend to think that there's no advantage in going out of our ways to Milan when we can read and see numerous reports about the Salone without moving an inch from our seats in Japan, but the famous brands' new products designed by well-distinguished maestros that the Japanese media love to write about aren't the only highlights. Obtaining only the information that the Japanese prefer brings the risk of becoming "a frog in the well", and that's something any creator would not want to be.

Another merit in visiting the place is that we get to understand how furniture is regarded and used in daily life in a country that has lived with the culture of using chairs for thousands of years. This becomes a chance, not to imitate skin-deep designs, but to reconsider the relation between furniture and culture in our own county, where chairs came into the average folks' livingroom just some decades ago.

I've been working in my homeland for about ten years now, but meeting my active friends in Milan, I feel that I should not be too settled to this present state of mine. Having the opportunity to talk to a couple of Italian manufacturers, I'm earnestly looking outward.

TOKYO DESIGN WEEK 2016

Hi there, this is Shimizu.

We've just finished unloading our exhibit for TOKYO DESIGN WEEK which starts tomorrow. This year, we're in a Japanese mode!

Resembling a "shoji" screen or a folding "byobu" screen, this unusual partition emitting soft light is only 8mm thin. The thinness of the light emitting device itself is only 1mm! "OLED" enabled us to do this. For those of you who thought "what's that?", I'll attach the images of the leaflet to refer to.

The new box

Hi, this is Shimizu.

We revised the design of the box for the Perpetual Calendar from more Trees. A calendar inside a calendar, just like a Matryoshka. The new box revealing its content has made the calendar even more suitable for a gift.
